My curatorial work is rooted in our responsibility to diverse, living audiences. I focus on the balance between hard historical truths and celebrating contemporary arts, cultural specificity and protocol, and intentional design.
“In placing We’Wha in visual accordance with these LGBTQ activists, Ortiz envisions a future of gender expression that both draws from a long history of Indigenous gender roles and pushes forward into new imaginings of what gender can be. Ortiz’s ceramic works return a voice to We’Wha, her gender identity and the clay she shaped, while also demonstrating a path forward for modern individuals to express their gender identities”
